'We saw a sign on the freeway. It said, "Once Perilous Now Safe," something like that, about a bridge or something, and I said — she was looking at Tim — 'that's me!'

Trying to avoid the loneliness that's come in the wake of his mother's recent passing, Phil has invited a bunch of old friends to stay with him on the coast. Tomorrow, Bella and Tim will arrive with their two kids, one on the brink of puberty; and the next day, Jo and Lucas will come too, with their little one. Then there's Annie, who will be by herself. Maybe this is a mistake. Maybe it's just what they all need.

The story of a beach holiday told by four different people, Time Together is a novel about different kinds of love, different kinds of loneliness, and the way spending time together can bring out the best and worst in each other.

Phil’s mother has passed away and, in an attempt to feel closer to her in this period of mourning, he invites his friends – Bella and Tim, Jo and Lucas, and Annie – to his parents’ coastal home. However, they’re no longer carefree kids, but adults with marriages, children and their own sets of issues. What could possibly go wrong? Luke Horton (The Fogging) beautifully encapsulates the triumphs and frustrations of friendships, relationships and parenthood in Time Together. The story, set against the backdrop of a beach holiday, explores the chaos of family dynamics, with the loss of Phil’s mother serving as an emotional anchor, reminding each character of life’s fragility. The vivid setting contrasts with the characters’ inner struggles, revealing how the relentless grind of domestic life – chores, demanding children, and daily stress – can wear you down. Yet, Horton reminds readers that life becomes unquestionably easier – or at least more manageable – when shared with those who have known you the longest and understand you in every situation. The book is told through four alternating perspectives; the shifts between viewpoints are subtle and the chapters are not labelled to indicate which character’s perspective is being followed, which may cause some initial confusion. Still, this approach ultimately contributes to a layered understanding of the group’s shared and individual experiences. Time Together highlights the enduring power of friendships that are so deep and unwavering that they feel more like family and is perfect for fans of Tim Winton, Georgia Blain and Gabrielle Zevin. This whirlwind of a beach read will make you laugh, cry and cherish the ones you hold dear.
